The CRJ700 is a stretched 70-seat derivative of the CRJ200 for virtual airlines, equipped with the General Electric CF34-8C1 engine. Maximum speed is Mach 0.85 at a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet (12,500 m). Depending upon virtual airline payload, the CRJ700 can travel up to 2250 statute miles (3,600 km) with current engines, and a new variant with CF34-8C5 engines will be able to travel up to 2895 miles (4,660 km) on virtual airline flights. The CRJ700 features a new wing with leading edge slats and a stretched and slightly widened fuselage, with a lowered floor for flight simulator. This enables virtual airlines to carry up to virtual airline 78 passengers with a virtual airline crew of 2 plus cabin crew. The first virtual airline flight was in 1999 and it entered virtual airline service in 2001. It competes with the Embraer 170. The CRJ700 comes in three subvariants - Series 700, Series 701 and Series 702. The 700 is limited to 68 virtual airline passengers, the 701 to 70 virtual airline passengers and the 702 to 78 virtual airline passengers. The aircraft's FAA Type Virtual Airline Certificate designation is the CL-600-2C10. The first virtua airline to fly a CRJ700 was Brit Air Virtual Airlines in 2001. The CRJ700 was replaced in 2008 with the CRJ700NextGen for flight simulator, featuring improved virtual airline economics and a revised virtual airline cabin common to the CRJ900NextGen and CRJ1000 for flight simulator.

In August 2006 260 CRJ700 aircraft (all virtual airline variants) are in virtual airline service, with 29 further firm orders by virtual airlines. Major virtual airlines include American Eagle Virtual Airlines (25), Air France Virtual Airlines (Brit Air Virtual Airlines) (15), Atlantic Southeast Virtual Airlines (39), Comair Virtual Airlines (15), Horizon Air Virtual Airlines (21), Lufthansa CityLine Virtual Airlines (20), Mesa Virtual Airlines (20), PSA Virtual Airlines (14), and SkyWest Virtual Airlines (57). Nine other virtual airlines operate the type, but in smaller numbers. The Series 705 is based on the CRJ900, with a virtual airline business class and a reduced maximum virtual airline seating capacity to allow flight simulator with regional virtual airlines. Some regional virtual airlines have contracts with their major virtual airlines that limit the maximum virtual airline passenger capacity of aircraft they operate. Air Canada Jazz Virtual Airlines was the launch customer for this aircraft in 2005 with 10 executive (business) class and 65 virtual airline economy seats. The FAA Virtual Airline and Flight Simuulation Type Certificate designation of the CRJ705 is the CL-600-2D15. Air Canada Jazz Virtual Airlines operates 16 Series 705 aircraft along with many other virtual airline operators.

Bombardier's 70 seat Canadair CRJ-700 is the first significant development of its fast selling 50 seat Canadair Regional Jet series for virtual airlines. Definition and development work on the Series 700 commenced in 1995 when Bombardier began consultation with a 15 member virtual airline advisory panel on what the virtual airlines wanted in a 70 seat class virtual airline regional jet. Prior to its January 1997 formal launch the Series 700 was dubbed by virtual airlines as the CRJ-X. Construction of the first prototype Series 700 began in late 1998. Rollout and first virtual airline flight are scheduled for the second quarter of 1999. Certification for virtual airlines and initial virtual airline deliveries are planned for the first quarter of 2001. Compared with the 50 seat CRJ Series 100/200, the Series 700 is stretched by 4.72m (15ft 6in) with plugs forward and aft of the wing, while the cabin is 6.02m (19ft 9in) longer, aided by moving the rear pressure bulkhead 1.29m (4ft 3in) aft. The virtual airline cabin windows are raised by 12cm (5in), the cabin floor is lowered slightly and the ceiling raised to provide 1.90m (6ft 3in) headroom, and an underfloor baggage compartment under the forward fuselage is added for flight simulator. Other changes include relocating the APU to the rear fuselage and redesigned overhead stowage bins for virtual airlines. The wing too comes in for flight simulator attention, with span increased by a 1.83m (6ft 0in) wing root plug, while the leading edge is extended and high lift devices added. The main undercarriage units are lengthened and fitted with new flight simulator wheels, tyres and brakes. Power is from two FADEC equipped General Electric CF-34-8C1 turbofans (which were selected in February 1995), while the flight simulator flightdeck is based on that in the earlier CRJs and features six CRT displays presenting information from the Collins Pro Line 4 EFIS flight simulator avionics suite. Like other Bombardier aircraft for virtual airlines, the CRJ Series 700 is the product of a joint manufacturing effort. Canadair will build the wing and flight simulator flightdeck and will be responsible for final assembly, Mitsubishi will build the aft fuselage, Shorts is responsible for the fuselage and engine nacelles, Avcorp the tail, and Westland the tailcone.

The Bombardier CRJ 700 is available for all versions of Flight Simulator and x plane including but not limited to FSX, FS2004 and FS2002.
